This Course is primarily for those who work in services providing disability information, advice, resources and support, and for people wishing to work in the sector. It provides a good grounding in working with disabled people and their family/whānau.
You will learn about the philosophies that underpin the way we work -the legislation, codes, and principles that help us uphold the rights of disabled persons.
Each Module has sections on different, but related topics. Throughout the Course you will find activities to check your learning. There are tasks to complete. These activities are designed to deepen your knowledge and strengthen your understanding as you progress through the Modules.
The modules that make up the Course can be completed in any order, however we suggest you start at Module One and work your way through.
The modules are:
Module 1 : Policy and Legislation
Module 2: Supported Decision Making
Module 3: Community Connections
Module 4: Collaboration
Module 5: Disability Responsiveness
Module 6: Cultural Responsiveness
The Modules in this course can be completed in any order, however you may wish to start at Module 1 and work through in order. Each module contains different tasks to help to test your knowledge, as well as build on it.
There are also external links to follow to extra reading, videos to watch, and some resources to download.
You might also find reflective tasks to help you to think more deeply about a topic, especially in the context of your life or workplace.
These tasks are not assessed but completing them will expand your knowledge and help you to put the learning into context. We strongly recommend that you spend time completing all of these tasks to help you get the most out of the course.
When starting any course, the most common question is always “how long will it take?”. This Course is self-guided meaning that you can work on this in your own time, and at your own pace. Each page in the Course will give you an estimated reading time, however this doesn’t include the time it will take you to complete tasks, and the external reading.
We expect that all students will easily be able to complete each Module within two months, including the assessments. Many students will be able to work at a faster pace. All assessments are due by the end of the Course, however we recommend that you work on these as you go to help to build your knowledge at each stage. The Course must be completed within one year.
In each Module you will find an assessed task to complete. These are longer tasks that you might need to do a bit of extra reading for, or you might need to spend some time reflecting on your own life, or workplace.
You will need to carefully read the information on the topic, do a little extra reading using the links provided in the Module, and spend some time analysing this information. This assessment is asking for your own understanding on the topic, and your thoughts on it.
Once you have written this assessment, you will then upload it as a MS Word document using the link. If you prefer to provide audio or video responses for assessment please let us know and we will arrange this for you.
The assessment will be reviewed and you will receive feedback on it within a few weeks. The aim of the assessment is to test your knowledge, understanding, and explore your reflections. There is no specific format that needs to be followed.
Everything submitted in this course will be kept confidential, however if you are using case studies in your tasks, please change the names to protect peoples’ privacy.
Plagiarism is not acceptable. Please ensure that what you submit is your own work. You may quote from other material but these should be brief and reference the source.
